Ralph Manno, clarinet

Born in Brühl (Germany), Ralph Manno is one of the leading clarinetists of his generation. During his studies in Cologne and Berlin he received national and international scholarships, such as the “Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes” and the “Herbert-von-Karajan-Academy” of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and was a prize-winner of the “Deutscher Musikwettbewerb”. Already at the age of 23 he became solo-clarinetist of WDR Orchestra Cologne, before Sergiu Celibidache asked him to join the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.

Besides numerous perfomances as soloist with many renowned orchestras Ralph Manno dedicates himself enthusiastically to chamber music. Contemporary music is of equal importance to him; Manno collaborated with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio and Krzysztof Penderecki and initiated many new pieces by living composers. His vast discography contains the most famous compositions for clarinet by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Hindemith, Strawinsky, Messiaen, Bartok etc. as well as French repertoire from the 20th century.

At the age of only 29 he was appointed Professor for Clarinet at the Hochschule für Musik Cologne. He regularly gives masterclasses in the USA, Japan, South America, Australia and Europe and is a sought-after performer at international festivals.
